Plan Plan Plan

You can scroll through my old posts to see what I had to say last summer after I completed the epic adventure race known as Primal Quest. One of the things I did, along with my planning OCD teammate Steve, was plan. I (we) planned everything I could possibly think of and it paid off in huge dividends. So why am I telling you now. Well there are frequently people who I encounter that marvel at what I have done and continue to do in adventure racing and endurance athletics. They often make comments like, "I could never do something like that." The fact is they are wrong. It really doesn't matter who you are or what you want to do, barring extreme circumstances, you can do what you decide to do and what you need is a plan.

Here is the good news. Plans are easy to come by especially in the arena of physical fitness. I bought a pre-made training plan on www.trainingpeaks.com. They offer a free basic membership, which is all I used, and then I bought the plan of trainer Danny Suter who is an accomplished adventure racer and seasoned trainer. It worked great. I still have access to the plan on their website and I refer to it when needed. There are myriad other plans on Training Peaks alone not to mention the other websites for fitness and endurance junkies.

Make the commitment to do what you have always wanted to do by finding the right plan for you. It doesn't matter if you want to run the Atacama Crossing next year in Chile. If you plan for it you can do it, and do it well!! Who knows, if you let me know I may see you in Chile.
